PRESS RELEASE: Hoosier Businesses Seek to Transform Indiana Health Care

Feb 8, 2024

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Major Indiana employers today announced the creation of the Indiana Business Health Collaborative (IBHC), a coalition of innovators, job creators, and other health care stakeholders focused on reducing health care costs, maintaining a healthy workforce, and strengthening Indiana’s economic competitiveness.

This unique partnership will convene members around its five guiding principles:

  • Collaboration;

  • Competition;

  • Education;

  • Commitment; and

  • Results.

These principles will help drive market-based solutions that aim to lower the cost of care in Indiana while ensuring that Hoosiers are afforded unrestricted access to the high-quality services that they rely on.

Luke Messer will serve as the Chief Executive of the IBHC, having spent the majority of his professional career developing and advancing solutions that have helped create a robust and thriving business climate in Indiana.

“Hoosier businesses, colleges and universities, and the health care industry have spoken: driving better health outcomes for our state will require open collaboration between all stakeholders,” said Chief Executive Luke Messer. “Successfully addressing health care affordability in Indiana, without compromising quality or access to critical services that countless Hoosiers depend on, will require a market-based approach. The Indiana Business Health Collaborative will unite businesses and health care industry stakeholders to craft market solutions geared towards maintaining a healthy workforce and bolstering the state's economic competitiveness.”

The IBHC encourages all stakeholders seeking to improve health outcomes for Hoosiers through a market-based approach to join its efforts. Currently, the IBHC is a diverse partnership that includes the following entities:

The IBHC’s diverse membership base is fully committed to engaging with members of the state’s business community to craft robust, market-based solutions to improve the affordability, quality, and access of care throughout the state.

“Improving health outcomes for Hoosiers begins with expanding access to high-quality health care through innovative ideas and a market-based approach,” said Kevin Hern, Senior Vice President, Value & Access for Lilly USA. “Lilly is proud to join the Indiana Business Health Collaborative as a founding member and support the organization’s five guiding principles as a blueprint for developing comprehensive solutions to address cost, access, and quality of care in Indiana.”
“Now more than ever, the business community and other stakeholders invested in the economic development of our great state must come together and work towards developing market solutions to the issues that are adversely impacting quality of and access to care,” said Tom Cassady, Benefits Practice Leader – Indiana for the Horton Group. “That is why the Horton Group is thrilled to join the Indiana Business Health Collaborative’s efforts and looks forward to working alongside fellow members to ensure that Hoosiers are afforded unobstructed access to high-quality health care.”
“As one of the largest employers in our community, we care deeply about the cost of health care and the need for partnerships with business leaders and other stakeholders to continue to shape health care delivery, so it is sustainable for everyone, long into the future,” said Kreg Gruber, Chief Executive Officer of Beacon Health System. “The IBHC will provide an opportunity to convene great minds who share common goals for outstanding and affordable health care.”
“Indiana is one of the best states in the country for doing business,” said Dr. Sue Ellspermann, President of Ivy Tech Community College. “As Indiana’s engine of workforce development with more than 7,000 employees across the state, Ivy Tech is committed to working with Indiana Business Health Collaborative members to find innovative solutions that will strengthen Indiana’s economic competitiveness and improve the quality of life of all working Hoosiers.”
“As a rural, regional health care facility, Good Samaritan has learned first-hand the importance of building lasting relationships with local employers,” said Rob McLin, President and CEO of Good Samaritan. “We have successfully launched our own health insurance product to provide easy access and lower costs for a vast array of businesses ranging from construction companies to school systems. The IBHC will give health care providers like Good Samaritan an opportunity to work directly with business leaders on the key issues they are facing daily when it comes to health care access, cost, quality, and overall experience with their local providers. The only way we get better and truly meet the needs of our customers is to listen, learn, and adapt.”
 “Baptist Health Floyd is honored to be a part of a group of highly motivated organizations invested in making health care more affordable for all Hoosiers,” said Mike Schroyer, President of Baptist Health Floyd. “It will take collaboration between all stakeholders to drive better health outcomes and lower health care costs for our state. I look forward to working alongside members of the IBHC to develop initiatives that preserve access to quality care and lower health care costs in every community, large and small."
